Here we are in a frontier land: Italy and France are mixed not only as far as speech is concerned, but also in the way of life, "stile di vita" in Italian. And yesterday Mediterranean people, Celtic, Ligurian and Provencal people exchanged "signs" which can be found, intact in their charm, even to-day, in an inscribed tablet, in a portal, in a frieze.
The natural border was already described by Strabo and Plinius the Old.
The Alps, with an acrobatic descent, create a passage along the coast, clearing an opening for men who have always taken advantage of it. Nature changes, the landscape modifies, vegetation is multiform. The presence of men and their work is constant. One eye on the sea and one eye on the land. The sun - you can really say - never sets here, neither in summer nor in winter. Days are long because sun beams seem to linger more than elsewhere on such a beautiful landscape and on such a lucky land.
The coast is not a low and sandy one, nor is it unapproachable and rocky. Here the sea mingles with the houses, with the view and the landscape.
