“ In Roman times Sanremo was known as Villa Matuciana ”
SANREMO: in Roman times it was known as Villa Matuciana.
In the medieval period it was under the control of Albenga, passing via Ventimiglia to the Republic of Genoa where it remained. The dense nature of the building and the layout of the Pigna district is based historically on defensive reasons.
Along the roads of the Pigna there are some eleven gateways which gave added protection to the inhabitants in the event of attack. Foreigners have been mainly responsible for the gentrification of Sanremo; two of the best known are Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna and scientist Alfred Nobel. Sanremo today stretches along the coast; the old town, Pigna, is right at the centre.
Sanremo is actually an open-air museum with some marvellous examples of architecture including the Casino, the Parco Marsiglia, the Russian Orthodox church of San Basilio, the XVI – XVII century Borea d’Olmo which houses the local archaeological museum and the San Siro Cathedral. On the eastern side of the town is the Villa Ormond park and towards the sea Villa Nobel.
The festivals that take place throughout the year at Sanremo are almost too numerous to mention, but the Music Sanremo Festival is world-renowed.
